Saturday may 30th 2009 we lost a 20 year old red tipped photinia a couple months ago. Some of the plants in the corner are doing really well but the majority of them are looking very sparse. As the fungus spreads it disrupts vascular function in the leaves which eventually fall. It usually produces symptoms in the spring exuding a pale brown watery substance from cankers on the wood that darken with exposure to the air. Starting as a red brown or black dot on leaves the leaf spot expands outward as the fungus grows.

On heavily diseased leaves the spots unite to form larger maroon blotches. Hi i planted a new hedge photinia red robin against the wall at the bottom of our garden last year. Eventually the leaves will fall off. Photinia tolerates cutting back to about 6 inches above the ground. Do not repeatedly trim endangered shrubs to encourage the new red growth.
